Travel

We hope you are looking forward to your trip. Below is some helpful advice on travelling to the conference venue.

By air

Heathrow Airport

The nearest airport to Royal Holloway is Heathrow (approx. 7 miles). You can reach Royal Holloway from Heathrow via bus, taxi or car. There is no convenient connecting train. Delegates should make their own way to the conference, but may wish to use the conference-organised shuttle bus service to return to Heathrow airport at the end of the conference. The bus will depart rom Royal Holloway on 21st June 2017 and shuttle between Royal Holloway and Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 at the following times:

  • 13:30
  • 14:30
  • 15:30
  • 16:30

Other London Airports

Gatwick Airport is approx. 35 miles from Royal Holloway. From Gatwick you can transfer by coach to Heathrow airport or by train to central London and then to Royal Holloway. From other London airports, which are further from Royal Holloway, you can reach the university by train via central London or by car or taxi. See below for further information.

By train

The closest train station to Royal Holloway is Egham. There are frequent weekday services from London Waterloo to Egham (40 minutes), Reading to Egham and Woking to Egham (change at Weybridge). Services at weekends may be less frequent. Train links (including Eurostar) are available via London and other international links via Reading.

Please be aware that Egham station is outside the Oyster card area, so you will need to purchase a separate ticket.

Getting from Egham station to campus

Egham station is approximately 20 minutes’ walk to campus. Turn right out of the station along Station Road and walk about 100 metres to the junction and the traffic lights. Turn left at the junction and follow the road to the large roundabout; go left up Egham Hill. Royal Holloway’s entrance is on the left immediately after the second footbridge.

If you have heavy bags or prefer not to walk, taxis are available at the station for approximately £7.

It’s possible to take the bus from the station to campus but do note on the schedules that although there are 2 buses (the 8 and the 441) they only come twice an hour, and unfortunately within minutes of each other. The bus will cost £1 (cash only) to take you up the hill to Royal Holloway from the Church Road stop, and will drop you off at the top of campus near the Windsor Building.

By car

Royal Holloway is on the A30, 19 miles from central London and about a mile south-west of the town of Egham. The postcode for sat nav systems is TW20 0EX

Directions from the M25

After leaving the M25, follow the A30 west (signposted Bagshot and Camberley) – this is the Egham by-pass. At the first roundabout, take the second exit. At the second roundabout, take the second exit and continue on the A30 up Egham Hill. Royal Holloway’s entrance is on the left at the top of the hill, immediately after the second footbridge.

Directions from the M3

Leave the M3 at junction 3, at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A322. Proceed under the road bridge and turn left, then merge onto the A30. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A30. Continue on the A30, through Sunningdale towards Staines. Royal Holloway’s entrance is on the right immediately before the footbridge.

Parking

Free car parking will be available on campus. Please ensure you have provided the following information to sales-office@royalholloway.ac.uk on, or prior, to arrival so that you can be added to the Visitor Database for the duration of your stay:

  • car registration number, make, model and colour;
  • arrival and departure dates and times.

The Campus plan shows a variety of car parks on site.  For Butler, Founders and Reid Hall use P5, P7, P8 or P12 car parks.

As car parking spaces are free of charge, they cannot be booked and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Please note all parking must be legal, or a penalty charge notice (PCN) will be issued for any vehicles parked in contravention of the College’s parking regulations.

By bus

London Heathrow Airport > Royal Holloway

There are two bus services between London Heathrow Airport and Royal Holloway:

From the Heathrow Central Bus Station or Terminal 5, the number 441 bus also stops outside Royal Holloway’s main entrance but it takes a less direct route and the journey is therefore longer (approx. 1 hour 5 minutes).
